 For me no purpose of religion. People feel secure and confident by following a particuler religion , and religion is connected to God , So by following a religion We feel We are going close to God. Religion is somewhat also related to the society. Followers of a region make a strong social community.

 This answer needs appreciation.As it shows that you have basic understanding of the life philosphy.In my view,As you already said that Religion relates to society.This is right.In life, for any person there are normally two perspective of life.1.Individual 2. SocialAs you said we folow religion because of society.Its right,But this is from social perspective. From individual perspective we also follow religion at times when we are not accepting any religion defined by society.But we are not aware of that religion.Actually problem is that we are not focused.And in that case we are termed as revolter.If we are focused then by that strength we servive with our view and style in the society.So,Religion in my view is a viewpoint that is implemented by some one in his life and if he is enough intelligent and strong in proving his view point and the implentation of that in life then that is accepted as a guideline for that society and included by that society in thier religion.Main thing is that life is very dynamic and evolutionary.That's the reason we have so many religions in this world.Because time to time in this world some great people used to come and give a new direction to people and that is accepted as a religion by that society(Group of persons).
