Fotheringham made his name using this blotted line-style
from Andy Warhol's pre-pop advertising days--that is, before the advent
of irony's pervasive heyday. His work represents both the opposite of the
aggressive, appropriated, cut-up poster look of the '70s and its logical
conclusion: self-conscious, clean, somehow both inevitable and new.
